Telltale Signs of a Termite Infestation
Here are some pointers on how to spot termites on your property:
- Termite mud tubes can be seen on your or neighbouring properties
- Any wooden object sagging or with holes in it
- Small mud deposits around windows, doors or any cracks/slits
- Other wooden structures may be damaged or brittle on the property
- Any wooden structures are weak and break easily
If you have seen any of the above, we recommend arranging a termite inspection as soon as possible.
When It Comes to Termite Infestations, You Should Not Wait
Termite infestation can wreak havoc on a building in a very short period of time. They will destroy anything made of wood that is not treated correctly. They can cause major structural damage in a matter of weeks and destroy a building in a matter of months.
Termites can damage:
- Walls
- Roofs
- Basements
- Attics
- Decking
- Anything with a wooden frame or made from wood
Termite Species in South Africa
In South Africa, the two main culprits in termite-related damage are subterranean termites and harvester termites. Often mistaken for white ants due to their pale appearance.
Harvester Termites
Harvester termites are prevalent in arid and semi-arid regions. They collect and eat grass, leading to visible patches of cleared ground. Less likely to invade homes but can devastate vegetation.
Subterranean Termites
The most destructive species. They build colonies underground and create mud tunnels to access food sources above ground. They can chew through wood, flooring, and even wallpaper.
Termite Treatment Methods
With termites, it is best to employ a preventative control plan as once they infest your property it is much more costly to control them.
🛡️ Chemical Termite Barriers
Long-term protection involving a continuous chemical barrier around and beneath your foundation. Treatments typically last 5-10 years. Maintenance checks recommended every 6-12 months.
🎯 Termite Bait Stations
Used once your property has been infected. Treatment takes 3+ months to eliminate the colony. Bait boxes are replenished every 4-6 weeks.
💨 Termite Fumigation
The most effective choice for severe infestations. Uses potent chemicals and requires the property to be evacuated. Followed by preventative chemical treatment.
Organic Termite Control
There are several effective organic treatments including Sodium Bromate sprays and paints (safe for people and animals), heat and cold treatments, and utilizing nematodes that prey on termites.
